Hopes and Fears promo items

Please note, only Hopes and Fears items (2004-2005) are listed below.

Below are listed the promo items which have were sent out in advance of each release to journalists and radio stations to promote the various stages of Hopes and Fears. Please remember that all promo items were distributed for FREE (unless otherwise stated), so the seller will be making 100% profit from each item. There's no tracks on promos that haven't appeared on official release, so promos are really for collectors.

Stickered promos: Often, record companies send out copies of the single to journalists which aren't promos but just feature a sticker saying "Promo - not for resale". Be wary of these - not only does the sticker have little value (I'd say around £1 more than the proper release at most!) but is also very easy to fake.

I've tried to include pictures - thanks to Bob for lending me the scanner, and to Jess and Simon for many of the images. If you've got anything to add, please email me at promos @ keaneshaped.co.uk

Fakes

Please note, the following are fakes. They are worth approximately 10p for the CD, and a further 20p for the packaging after the seller has downloaded the tracks from the internet - be very wary of these!

Promo CDs - Hopes and Fears

Release Info Pictures
Everybody's Changing (Fierce Panda)
  1. Everybody's Changing
It seems I've been proved wrong - there WERE promos printed for these; approximately 300 in fact.
A 6 track 'promo' containing all 3 tracks from Everybody's Changing and This Is The Last Time has been touted around ebay - this is definately NOT an official Fierce Panda promo.
This Is The Last Time (Fierce Panda)
  1. This Is The Last Time
  2. Can't Stop Now
  3. Allemande
This promo is unusual in that it contains all 3 tracks from the single, yet was only given out in a plastic slipcase.
Somewhere Only We Know
  1. Somewhere Only We Know
Interestingly, the promo features a different cover to that of on the final artwork.
Everybody's Changing
  1. Everybody's Changing
Similarly to Somewhere Only We Know, the promo features a different cover to that of on the final artwork.
Hopes and Fears
  1. Somewhere Only We Know
  2. Bend And Break
  3. We Might As Well Be Strangers
  4. Everybody's Changing
  5. Your Eyes Open
  6. She Has No Time
  7. Can't Stop Now
  8. Sunshine
  9. This Is The Last Time
  10. On A Day Like Today
  11. Untitled 1
  12. Bedshaped
The CD is inside the inner slipcase, which in turn slots into the outer slipcase. If you look inside the outer slipcase, one side says "HOPES", the other "FEARS". I've tried to take a picture, but it hasn't come out very well I'm afraid.
All promos are numbered on the CD and the back of the outer sleeve (mine's number 288). The CDs are copyprotected (I've tried with most rippers and they've all failed), and also watermarked. My understanding of 'watermarking' is that each CD is different, and contains frequencies that don't affect the sound to listener, but make it possible to identify the 'pattern'. Using this system Island keep track of which number promo was sent to whom, so when tracks were leaked onto the net before release, it was possible to detect from which promo the MP3s have been ripped from, and therefore who had leaked the promo.
If anyone has a scan of a 'clean' front cover, it'd be appreciated!
Hopes and Fears Sampler
  1. Somewhere Only We Know
  2. Everybody's Changing
  3. Bedshaped
  4. We Might As Well Be Strangers
  5. This Is The Last Time
  6. She Has No Time
This is very similar to the above promo, but only has less tracks, is a different colour, and features the text "Album Sampler" on the front. I presume this was sent out earlier than the above 'final' promo.
Thanks to Lellie and Kev for info about this one, and to 'hysteria' for the scans.
Bedshaped
  1. Bedshaped
Similarly to the previous singles, the promo features a different cover to that of on the final artwork.
This Is The Last Time
  1. This Is The Last Time
Similarly to the previous singles, the promo features a different cover to that of on the final artwork.
Bend And Break
  1. Bend And Break
This promo was sent out to many international radio stations for promo in late 2004/early 2005, and I was told it would not be released as a commercial single. However, it has now been released in Germany. Promos have been spotted on ebay in Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden and the USA.

Promo CDs - Under The Iron Sea

Release Info Pictures
Is It Any Wonder?
  1. Is It Any Wonder?
Despite the apparent spelling mistake ("IS IT ANY WONDOR?") this is a genuine promo.
  • CD front - required, please contribute
  • CD back - required, please contribute
Under The Iron Sea
  1. Atlantic
  2. Is It Any Wonder?
  3. Nothing In My Way
  4. Leaving So Soon?
  5. A Bad Dream
  6. Hamburg Song
  7. Put It Behind You
  8. The Iron Sea
  9. Crystal Ball
  10. Try Again
  11. Broken Toy
  12. The Frog Prince
The CD is inside the inner slipcase, which in turn slots into the outer slipcase.
All promos are numbered on the CD. The CDs are copyprotected (I've tried with most rippers and they've all failed, and even fail to play on my PC), and also watermarked. My understanding of 'watermarking' is that each CD is contains unique frequencies that don't affect the sound to listener, but make it possible to identify the pattern if the audio is ever copied (even if copied onto MiniDisc or any other medium). Using this system, Island keep track of which number promo was sent to whom, so it is possible to detect from which CD any MP3s leaked onto the internet have been ripped from, and therefore who had leaked the promo. So if you've got one, don't even think about it!

Flyers

Don't pay too much for flyers - they are free after all! I've asked politely at the end of evenings if I can take a handful and they've said that's ok - so they're not exactly rare!
Somewhere Only We Know Given out during the February 2004 Somewhere Only We Know tour. 105x148mm (A6).
Hopes and Fears I got this one at the ULU gig on the 9th March 2004. I don't think they were given out anywhere else, but email me if you think I'm wrong!
Printed on card as opposed to paper. 148x210mm (A5).
Everybody's Changing Given out during the Everybody's Changing tour (late April 2004) and in early May (Astoria and Forum gigs).
These advertise the album on the back. 105x148mm (A6).
Japanese Hopes and Fears This is a bit different - I saw this on the Japanese ebay. If anyone can do a translation, it'd be greatly appreciated! 148x210mm (A5).
Bedshaped These were sent to Street Team members to distribute during the week of release.
These advertise the album on the back. Approx 150x215mm (approximately a bit bigger than A5).
This Is The Last Time Given out during the This Is The Last Time tour (late October/November 2004).
Approx 101x144mm (approximately A6).

Posters

Similarly to flyers, don't overpay - it's possible to 'borrow' them from the walls after gigs if you ask the right people nicely.
This Is The Last Time Features the This Is The Last Time artwork and single promotion. This poster was also sent out to some fans who wrote to the band towards the end of 2003 and was often signed. 420x594mm (A2)
Somewhere Only We Know February tour Features the February tour dates and the SOWK leaves. 297x420mm (A3)
Somewhere Only We Know Features the SOWK leaves. Approx 533x734mm
A version of the same, featuring just the artwork and the Keane logo also exists.
Everybody's Changing / Hopes and Fears tour This double sided poster features the Everybody's Changing artwork on one side. On the other side, the Hopes and Fears album cover, and a shot from the Everybody's Changing promo video shoot. Approx 533x734mm
Bedshaped Features the Bedshaped cover artwork. This poster was supposed to be given away for free from selected indie shops with the Bedshaped single during its week of release, but no shops had it in the first week (they did however arrive in the 2nd week!). They were however distributed to Street Team members. Approx 300x425mm (approximately A3)
Bedshaped 2 I found this poster on ebay, but have seen it nowhere else - so is a bit of mystery! The artwork features on Alex Lake's website so is genuine, and the quality of the poster is excellent. A lovely more 'arty' poster. The reverse features the simple piano hammers motive again. Approx 420mmx558mm (approximately A2)
Winter US Tour 2005 Apparently this poster was sold on the February USA 2005 tour for $15. Only 25 were sold each night. Approx 18x24inches

Mailing List offers

7" record box and special 7" These boxes are a little more rare than most things... Everyone on the mailing list was sent an email with a link to an application form, the first 1000 people received these limited edition numbered boxes (mine's number 0508) to store the 7"s from all the singles from the Hopes and Fears campaign, and also a promised special 7" containing a new track - which will be delivered as a Christmas present.
The orange sash is notoriously difficult to take on and off to open the box.
Click here for more info about the 7".
Everybody's Changing Postcards and plectrum These were sent out in early May 2004. They were sent out in 3 different envelopes, the final one containing the plectrum. Postcard: 148x105mm (A6).
USA tour photos booklet During the week of Bedshaped's release, an A4 photocopied letter from the band and an A5 booklet (12sides) of black and white photos of the band taken by Alex Lake during their USA tour were sent out to people on the mailing list.
The letter is dated "Switzerland, 12th August 2004", but many people didn't receive it - only the booklet. The booklet features commentries by Alex Lake with explanations of the photos.
This booklet is also sold in a special "Photobook" edition of Hopes and Fears with a DVD style case, in the US.
This Is The Last Time slipcase Sent out during the week of This Is The Last Time's release, a slipcase to put the CD and DVD into, and an A4 photocopied Christmas letter, again handwritten by the band.

Unusual merchandise for sale

Merchandise can be purchased from Keane's official shop at http://keane.trinitystreetdirect.com.
Hopes and Fears teatowel These are sold on the official merchandise site (currently unavailable) for £5 as teatowels and were also available at gigs for the same price - but I was told when I bought mine that they're flags.
Somewhere Only We Know scarf These are sold on the official merchandise site (currently unavailable) for £10 and were also sold on the This Is The Last Time tour.
Keane fabric art These are sold on the official merchandise site (currently unavailable) for £10 and were also sold on the This Is The Last Time tour. Measures 100x150cm - it's massive!
Sweatband These were sold on the This Is The Last Time tour for £5.
Badges and stickers To keep track of all of these would be virtually impossible. Badge sets have been sold previously (for around £3) as have packs of 20 stickers (£3). There seem to be a lot of fake ones on ebay (as a very rough guide, anything before Somewhere Only We Know, or that features their faces is likely to be fake), but for such small items costing so little, it doesn't particularly matter. Just don't pay for a "rare" badge or sticker, unless you really likely it - badge machines don't cost that much!

Other merchandise

Merchandise can be purchased from Keane's official shop at http://keane.trinitystreetdirect.com.
Hopes and Fears bookmatches These were given out for free at various Hopes and Fears launch parties, although I think they were withdrawn due to the fact they don't say "Keane" on them anywhere! There must be a lot of them as I've checked the supplier's website and it says the minimum order is 10,000. They're pretty cool I think - the tips are even the Hopes and Fears green!
Tshirts Again, there have been far too many to list. Pretty much all official tshirts have been made by "Sandbag" or "Rag And Bone Clothing" though (clearly marked on the label). The only exception I can think of, is the "This Is The Last Time" tshirts that were sent out to lucky fans in winter 2003!
